Coldplay’s frontman Chris Martin has announced that the band will release only 12 studio albums, with their upcoming 10th album, Moon Music, set to drop on October 4. In a candid interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Martin emphasized the significance of this self-imposed limit, stating, “We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s real. Yeah, I promise.”
Martin explained that this decision aligns with a philosophy of quality over quantity, citing iconic artists like the Beatles and Bob Marley, who have similar limits in their discography. He expressed that maintaining high standards is crucial, saying, “Having that limit means the quality control is so high right now, and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great.”
The band’s decision also stems from a desire to allow each member more personal space in their lives. “I want to give the others some of their life for themselves,” Martin said, adding that he doesn’t want to pressure his bandmates into creating music when they are older.
While Coldplay may be stepping back from studio albums, Martin assured fans that he will continue making music in some capacity, potentially exploring side projects with his bandmates. “If we do something together after that creatively beyond touring, then it’ll be something different, or it’ll be a side thing, or it’ll be a compilation of things we hadn’t finished,” he noted.
Moon Music arrives on October 4, marking the beginning of the band’s final chapter in studio album releases.
