Luminar Technologies, a leading manufacturer of lidar sensors for autonomous vehicles, announced on Monday that it has reduced its workforce by approximately 30% since the beginning of 2024, surpassing its earlier plan to cut 20%. This decision is part of a broader restructuring initiative aimed at streamlining operations and improving financial stability.
The workforce reduction is expected to incur additional cash charges of $4 million to $6 million, primarily affecting the third and fourth quarters of 2024. In a filing, Luminar indicated that these layoffs are crucial for realigning the company’s focus in a competitive market.
In May, Luminar also revealed plans to sub-lease portions of its facilities or entire locations to further decrease its global footprint. As of December 2023, the company employed nearly 800 individuals across the U.S., Germany, Sweden, India, and China.
Lidar sensors are essential for achieving full autonomy in vehicles, enabling self-driving cars and advanced driver-assistance systems to create a three-dimensional map of their surroundings. The cuts come at a critical time as the industry navigates evolving technological and economic landscapes.
