The head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has delivered a cautionary message about the global economy, emphasizing that high debt and low growth remain significant challenges. Despite some progress in economic recovery, Georgieva believes it’s too early to celebrate.

High Debt and Low Growth: Major Obstacles

In an interview with CNBC, Georgieva highlighted that while major central banks have made strides in reducing inflation, not all economies have benefited equally. Many countries continue to face high prices, which can lead to social unrest.

She stated, “When we look into the challenges ahead, the biggest one is low growth and high debt. This is where we can and must do better.” She pointed out that governments have become reliant on borrowing, complicating efforts to manage economic growth.

Changing Landscape of International Trade

Georgieva also warned that international trade is losing its role as a growth engine. Increasingly, countries are adopting restrictive trade policies. She noted that the U.S. and the European Union have imposed tariffs on China, driven by concerns about unfair trade practices.

This shift in trade dynamics has created an atmosphere of mistrust, particularly among advanced economies, which are now leading the way in protectionist measures. “What we are seeing is that many people feel globalization has not worked for them,” she said, pointing to job losses and community neglect.

Geopolitical Tensions Pose Risks

Georgieva further expressed concerns about rising geopolitical tensions, especially the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which could destabilize both regional and global markets. She emphasized that these tensions are key risks to global financial stability.

As finance ministers and central bank governors prepare for the IMF and World Bank Group’s annual meetings next week, they will discuss the world economic outlook, poverty eradication, and the green energy transition.

Conclusion: A Cautious Path Ahead

While progress has been made, Georgieva’s remarks serve as a reminder that the road to global economic stability is fraught with challenges. She urged policymakers to consider the long-term impacts of protectionist measures, as tariffs often hurt the very economies that impose them.
