On Wednesday, Great Britain’s most decorated Paralympian, Sarah Storey, further cemented her legendary status by winning her 18th gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Storey, 46, triumphed in the women’s C5 time trial, bringing her career total to 29 Paralympic medals, a feat she first achieved in 1992.

Storey’s victory contributed to a standout day for ParalympicsGB, which secured 13 additional medals, including two more golds. Wheelchair racer Sammi Kinghorn won the women’s T53 100m final, and Dimitri Coutya claimed gold in wheelchair fencing foil category B. The team also earned seven silver medals and three bronze.

With these results, Great Britain has increased its gold medal count to 33 and its total medal tally to 74, placing them second in the medal standings behind China, which has accumulated 135 medals.

Storey’s 18th gold came amidst criticism of the cycling course, which she described as “appalling.” The course, measuring just 14.1km, was shorter than the usual 22km, a change that Storey believes fails to adequately showcase Para-cycling. Despite this, she dominated the event, finishing in 20 minutes 22.15 seconds, 4.69 seconds ahead of silver medalist Heidi Gaugain, who is 27 years her junior.

Other notable performances included Fran Brown, who won silver in the women’s C1-3 category despite recently dislocating her shoulder, and Sophie Unwin, who, with pilot Jenny Holl, secured silver in the women’s B individual time trial, while Lora Fachie and guide Corrine Hall took bronze.

Storey’s success, now spanning nine Games, is particularly poignant as she competed in front of her children, Louisa and Charlie. Reflecting on her achievement, Storey expressed pride and gratitude, despite the challenges posed by the course. She remains focused on adding a 19th gold in the upcoming road race.

The day’s achievements highlight Great Britain’s ongoing prowess in the Paralympics, showcasing both individual and team excellence as they continue to make their mark on the global stage.
