Carles Puigdemont, the former Catalan separatist leader, made a dramatic return to Barcelona on Thursday, defying an arrest warrant and reigniting the independence movement he once championed. Puigdemont, who has been in self-imposed exile for seven years, addressed a crowd of thousands near the regional parliament, showing his continued commitment to Catalan independence despite facing legal jeopardy.

Puigdemont, 61, fled to Belgium in 2017 following a failed secession bid and has lived abroad ever since. His return to Spain comes amid a tense political climate and an outstanding arrest warrant for alleged embezzlement, charges he denies. The Spanish Supreme Court has upheld these arrest warrants despite recent legislative changes.

His appearance in Barcelona risks further complications for Catalonia’s political landscape. The regional parliament was heavily guarded as Puigdemont spoke to supporters waving independence flags and holding signs bearing his image. The presence of Puigdemont could delay the swearing-in of Socialist Salvador Illa as the new regional leader and strain the fragile coalition between the national government and Junts, Puigdemont’s party.

Puigdemont announced his return as a “trip from exile,” emphasizing his commitment to Catalan independence. He criticized the arrest warrant as a sign of “democratic anomaly,” highlighting his stance against the Spanish government’s actions.

The Catalan police force, Mossos d’Esquadra, surrounded the parliament building with a significant security presence. Far-right party Vox organized a counter-protest, condemning Puigdemont as a “criminal and fugitive.”

Despite the risks, Puigdemont’s return has energized supporters. Many see it as a strategic move to rejuvenate the independence movement, which has waned in recent years. Susana Masnou, a supporter wrapped in an independence flag, described Puigdemont’s act as “democratic disobedience” and praised his bravery.

The political turmoil surrounding Puigdemont’s return adds complexity to the regional and national political scene, where recent amnesty laws have sought to address the aftermath of the 2017 secession attempt. However, the amnesty does not apply to Puigdemont, further fueling the controversy.

As Catalonia prepares for a new political chapter, Puigdemont’s dramatic reappearance has once again spotlighted the region’s enduring struggle for independence and the ongoing tensions between regional aspirations and national authority.
