In a new development in the ongoing legal battles involving Hunter Biden, prosecutors have unveiled fresh charges related to his foreign business dealings. The latest allegations assert that Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, was engaged in a scheme to influence U.S. agencies on behalf of Romanian businessman Gabriel Popoviciu during Joe Biden’s vice presidency.

According to special counsel David Weiss, Hunter Biden and his business associate were hired by Popoviciu, who was under investigation for corruption in Romania. The prosecution claims that Hunter received payments disguised as fees for real estate management but was involved in efforts to sway U.S. policy and public opinion to benefit Popoviciu. These charges are part of a broader federal tax trial set to begin next month in Los Angeles.

Gabriel Popoviciu, who was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2017 for real estate fraud—a conviction he denies—reportedly sought Hunter Biden’s assistance to mitigate his legal challenges in Romania. Prosecutors allege that Hunter’s work for Popoviciu was a cover for lobbying U.S. agencies to influence the investigation against the Romanian businessman.

Hunter Biden’s legal team has countered these claims, requesting that references to the influence-peddling allegations be excluded from the trial. They argue that the accusations are politically motivated and not directly relevant to the tax charges, which center on Hunter’s alleged failure to pay $1.4 million in taxes over four years. Hunter has publicly acknowledged his struggle with drug addiction during this period but denies any criminal wrongdoing related to these new allegations.

The upcoming trial, which will also address Hunter’s recent conviction for lying about his drug use during a 2018 gun purchase, could have significant implications. While he faces up to 25 years in prison, as a first-time offender, he is expected to receive a lighter sentence.

As the trial approaches, the focus remains on whether the allegations of influence peddling will impact the proceedings or if they will be deemed irrelevant to the core tax charges. This case continues to attract significant attention amid the broader political and legal debates surrounding Hunter Biden and his business dealings.
