Anna Karen, 85, of EastEnders and On the Buses, died in a house fire, prompting a flood of tributes

“Unfortunately, a woman has died following a house fire on Windsor Road in Ilford,” according to a statement from the London Fire Brigade.

“A fire damaged part of the ground level of a mid-terrace property.

“Unfortunately, a woman died at the site.”

“At 22:40, the Brigade was dispatched, and by 23:38, the fire had been extinguished.

“The incident was attended by three fire engines and approximately 20 firemen from Ilford and Barking fire stations.”

Karen’s passing was mourned on the official Twitter page for the BBC soap EastEnders, with co-stars paying homage as well.

Karen was noted for her roles in EastEnders as Aunt Sal and On the Buses as Olive.

According to the BBC, she injured her back after falling at home in 2016 and was bed-bound for several years, yet she continued to act.

Karen was married to Terry Duggan, an actor and comedian, until his death in 2008.

Ann McCall was born in South Africa and migrated to London at the age of 17.
