Vice President Kamala Harris has vowed to speak out on the suffering in Gaza amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, urging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to finalize a ceasefire agreement. In a meeting with Netanyahu on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, Harris expressed her deep concern over the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.
Harris, who is also the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, emphasized the need for an end to the violence. “Israel has a right to defend itself, but the way it conducts this defense is crucial. The devastation in Gaza over the past nine months is heartbreaking,” Harris told reporters following the meeting.
She condemned the dire conditions faced by civilians, highlighting the images of dead children and displaced individuals. “We cannot remain indifferent to these tragedies. I refuse to be silent,” Harris asserted.
While affirming America’s steadfast support for Israel, Harris called for a resolution that addresses the needs of both Israelis and Palestinians. She detailed the proposed U.S.-backed ceasefire and hostage deal, stating, “It is time for this war to end in a manner that ensures Israeli security, releases all hostages, alleviates the suffering in Gaza, and upholds the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people.”
Harris noted progress in the ceasefire discussions and urged Netanyahu to expedite the deal. “To those advocating for peace, I hear you,” she said.
The Biden administration is actively working to secure the release of American hostages held in Gaza. Harris, who has met with the families of the hostages, named those currently in captivity.
Concluding her remarks, Harris underscored the importance of addressing the conflict without resorting to binary perspectives. “We must denounce terrorism and violence while working to prevent civilian suffering. It is crucial to condemn all forms of hate, including antisemitism and Islamophobia, and strive to unite our nation,” she added.
