A Banksy design that cut itself at a previous auction has sold-out for a record £16m.
Love is within the Bin was what remained of the artist’s live destruction of his piece woman with Balloon, that sold-out for £1m in 2018.
It went below the hammer at Sotheby’s in London on Thursday, merchandising for £16m – immensely over its £4-6m guide value.
Including a buyer’s premium, the buyer paid £18.5m in total.
The sale, that saw 9 bidders battle for around ten minutes, beats the previous record of £16.8m set for Banksy in March.
After closing bidding. auctioneer jazz musician Barker joked he was alleviated that the design was “still there”.
‘A true icon’
Before gap the bidding, mister Barker same that the painting became an “unexpected piece of performance art” once it cut within the same auction area once being sold-out to a “private European investor” 3 years past.
Opening bids at £2.5m, its tag hit £10m at intervals minutes as various offers were placed.
Bidding then bit by bit climbed to a record £15m because the race increasingly narrowed down between fewer bidders.
