Elon Musk’s Neuralink has announced a significant milestone in its quest to revolutionize medical technology: its experimental vision implant has received the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) ‘breakthrough device’ designation. This designation is granted to medical innovations that aim to diagnose or treat life-threatening or severely debilitating conditions, allowing for expedited development and review processes.
The device, named Blindsight, is engineered to help individuals who have lost both eyes and their optic nerves regain their sight. Musk took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share the news, stating that Blindsight “will enable even those who have lost both eyes and their optic nerve to see.” However, Neuralink has not yet revealed when it plans to begin human trials for the device, and the FDA has not provided additional comments on the matter.
Founded in 2016 by Musk and a team of engineers, Neuralink aims to develop a brain-chip interface that can be implanted in the skull. This cutting-edge technology is designed to process and transmit neural signals, potentially allowing patients with disabilities to move, communicate, and now, restore their vision. The chip can also send signals to external devices, such as computers or smartphones, opening new avenues for interaction and control.
In addition to the vision implant, Neuralink is also working on a separate device aimed at enabling paralyzed patients to control digital devices with their thoughts. A clinical trial is set to assess the effectiveness of this technology, initially involving three patients over several years. Earlier this year, Neuralink successfully implanted its brain chip in a second patient, who is now using it to play video games and learn 3D design.
