Sean Grayson, the former sheriff’s deputy facing murder charges in the shooting death of Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman in her Illinois home, held positions at six police agencies since 2020, state law enforcement records reveal.
Grayson, 30, who is white, pleaded not guilty to charges including first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct following the July 6 incident. He was terminated last week by the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office.
Body camera footage released Monday confirmed details of the fatal encounter, where Grayson shot Massey multiple times after responding to her 911 call reporting a suspected prowler.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Massey’s family, announced a Justice Department investigation into the incident during a Springfield news conference Tuesday. The family, joined by Massey’s father James Wilburn, called for the resignation of Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell.
