Dell Mandates In-Office Work for Global Sales Team Following Layoffs

Dell Technologies is making a notable shift in its work policy, mandating that its global sales team return to the office five days a week starting September 30. This decision, communicated in an internal memo obtained by Bloomberg, marks a departure from the remote work trend many companies have adopted.

The tech giant aims to promote collaboration and skill development among its sales force, emphasizing that “working remotely should be the exception rather than the routine.” Sales representatives will be expected to balance their time between in-person office work and customer interactions.

Previously, Dell had required staff to work in the office three days a week. However, exceptions will be made for remote sales team members who are unable to commute to a Dell office, with further details to be shared soon.

This policy change comes on the heels of a significant restructuring within Dell’s sales division, which included layoffs affecting approximately 12,500 employees, or about 10% of its workforce, as the company focuses on streamlining operations and prioritizing artificial intelligence initiatives.

Dell’s latest financial report indicated a 4% decline in revenue for its fiscal second quarter, with total revenue reaching $12.4 billion—falling short of market expectations. The report highlighted challenges in the personal computer segment, particularly a 22% year-on-year revenue drop in the consumer PC division, prompting Dell to consider strategic cost-cutting measures.

Dell’s shift to a stricter in-office policy reflects a broader trend in the tech industry, with other companies, such as Amazon, also announcing requirements for employees to return to the office five days a week.
