Former Sheffield United defender George Baldock has tragically passed away at the age of 31. The England-born Greece international was found unresponsive in the swimming pool of his home in Glyfada, southern Athens. Emergency services attempted to revive him, but he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, according to a police official reported by Reuters.
Baldock had recently joined Greek club Panathinaikos after spending seven years at Sheffield United. A family statement expressed their shock: “We can confirm that George has sadly passed away. As a family, we are in shock at this terrible loss.”
Panathinaikos also released a statement, mourning the loss of Baldock and offering condolences to his family: “We are shocked by the loss of our George. The family of Panathinaikos stands with the family and loved ones of George Baldock.”
Sheffield United shared their sorrow, emphasizing Baldock’s popularity among supporters and teammates: “The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends.”
Baldock had made four appearances for Panathinaikos, including starting in their recent goalless draw with Olympiakos. He earned 12 caps for the Greece national team, qualifying through his grandmother. Although Greece is set to play England in the Nations League on Thursday, Baldock was not selected for the match.
The Greek national team released a statement saying, “With profound sadness and sorrow, we bid farewell to George Baldock. There are no words to describe the human pain caused by the unexpected loss of one of our own.”
Born in Buckingham, Baldock began his career at MK Dons in 2009, making over 100 appearances before loan spells with Northampton and Oxford United. He joined Sheffield United in 2017, amassing 219 appearances and contributing to the club’s promotion to the Premier League in 2019 and again in 2023.
Baldock represented Greece for the first time in May 2022, making his debut the following month in a victory over Northern Ireland. His sudden death has left the Greek football community in shock, with teammates struggling to comprehend the tragic news. The Greek team has requested permission from UEFA to wear black armbands in his honor during their match against England and to observe a moment of silence.
His wife had been searching for him for several hours when he was found by the homeowner, and preliminary police reports indicate there are no signs of foul play. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death.
Numerous tributes have poured in from the football community. Manchester United’s Harry Maguire and Baldock’s former Sheffield United teammate Dean Henderson shared heartfelt messages on social media, while the Football Association expressed their devastation at his passing.
The English Football League also released a statement, acknowledging Baldock’s impact across various clubs: “Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and former colleagues.” Clubs such as MK Dons, Northampton Town, and Oxford United also offered condolences, reflecting on Baldock’s character and contributions to the sport.
