Tommy Shelby is officially back in action! Netflix has unveiled a first look at Cillian Murphy reprising his iconic role as the notorious gangster, alongside the announcement that production on the Peaky Blinders movie has officially commenced. Murphy was spotted on set with the series creator, Steven Knight, sharing a moment together.
Directed by Tom Harper, who has helmed several episodes of the acclaimed series, the Peaky Blinders film follows the show’s successful run, which first premiered in 2013 on BBC Two before being picked up by Netflix for U.S. audiences. The sixth and final season aired in 2022, with plans for a feature film confirmed in June.
“I’m thrilled to be returning to the character of Tommy Shelby,” Murphy stated. “It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”
Knight penned the screenplay for the film and serves as a co-producer alongside Murphy, Caryn Mandabach, and Guy Heeley. The executive production team includes Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren, and David Mason.
While details about the rest of the cast remain under wraps, it was previously revealed that Barry Keoghan, another Irish talent, will have an undisclosed role in the film. Murphy returns to Peaky Blinders following his Oscar win for Best Actor for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
