Taylor Swift made a high-profile endorsement of Kamala Harris for president following Tuesday night’s presidential debate. In a pointed Instagram post signed as “Childless Cat Lady,” a nod to Trump’s running mate JD Vance’s disparaging comments, Swift voiced her support for Harris, emphasizing her belief in the vice-presidential candidate’s leadership qualities and commitment to important causes.

Swift’s endorsement comes after Vance, Trump’s vice-presidential pick, faced backlash for his 2021 remarks that labeled Harris and other prominent Democrats as “childless cat ladies.” Vance later claimed his comments were meant to be sarcastic. Swift’s Instagram post, which includes a photo of her with a cat, directly counters this derogatory narrative and underscores her alignment with Harris’s values.

In her message, Swift praised Harris as a “steady-handed, gifted leader” and expressed confidence that a Harris-led administration would foster more progress. Swift also highlighted Harris’s choice of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as a vice-presidential candidate, noting Walz’s long-standing advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and women’s reproductive rights.

Swift’s decision to publicly share her voting choice was partly driven by concerns about misinformation. An AI-generated image falsely depicting her as endorsing Trump had been circulated, prompting her to clarify her stance and advocate for transparency in voting.

The singer’s endorsement follows a contentious debate between Harris and Trump, where issues like abortion rights, the economy, and immigration were hotly contested. Swift, who previously supported President Joe Biden and Harris in 2020, reiterated her opposition to Trump, reflecting on her past criticisms of his presidency, including his handling of racial issues.

Academics suggest Swift’s influence may be limited in swaying undecided voters, as her endorsement primarily resonates with her young, female fan base, which already largely supports Harris. Nevertheless, her post has garnered significant attention, amassing over 4.5 million likes within hours.

Swift also used her platform to encourage first-time voters to register, emphasizing the importance of informed decision-making in the upcoming election. Her post included a call to action for voters to conduct their own research and make their own choices.
