Shailene Woodley is set to star in and produce a biopic about rock legend Janis Joplin, which has secured a $2.5 million funding boost from the California Film Commission. The film, aiming to capture the essence of Joplin’s life and career, will be shot over a 30-day period with a total budget of approximately $10 million.
Woodley expressed her excitement about the project, highlighting the significance of California in Joplin’s life. “California meant so much to Janis Joplin — from the stoops of San Francisco to the wooden walls of Sunset Sound, the state became the stage upon which she explored not just the world of music, but the world of her vibrant humanity,” Woodley said.
In addition to the Joplin biopic, the California Film Commission has allocated $12 million in tax credits to bring NBC’s “Suits L.A.” to Los Angeles. This spinoff, which originally shot its pilot in Vancouver, will now benefit from California’s $150 million program designed to incentivize soundstage construction and create local jobs. The show is expected to generate 175 crew jobs over 96 days of filming.
Another NBC production, “Quantum Leap,” previously received $24 million from the soundstage program, which has seen a total of $150 million allocated with $114 million still available.
The commission’s latest round of funding also includes $39.6 million for 18 films. Notable allocations include $3.3 million for the film adaptation of “Community,” and $3.5 million for Disney’s “Lullaby.”
