Netflix’s latest series, Kaos, promises to bring a fresh, darkly comedic twist to Greek mythology, and it boasts a stellar cast led by Jeff Goldblum and David Thewlis. Created by Charlie Covell, known for The End of the F**ing World*, and produced by the team behind Chernobyl, this modern retelling dives into a world where gods and mortals collide in a battle of epic proportions. Premiering on August 29, the series follows six mortals entangled in the intrigues of capricious Greek gods while uncovering their own intertwined destinies and a long-standing prophecy.

Here’s a closer look at the talented ensemble bringing Kaos to life:

Jeff Goldblum as Zeus Jeff Goldblum stars as Zeus, the all-powerful King of the Gods. In this rendition, Zeus is portrayed as both omniscient and flawed, grappling with his paranoia over a prophecy suggesting his downfall. Adorned in modern tracksuits, his character oscillates between grandiosity and vulnerability, forging dubious alliances in a bid to maintain his divine rule while risking global chaos.

David Thewlis as Hades David Thewlis takes on the role of Hades, the brooding god of the Underworld and Zeus’s middle brother. Unlike his more carefree siblings, Hades diligently oversees the Underworld and takes the prophecy seriously. His attempts to address the impending doom often backfire, revealing the darkly comedic edge of the series.

Janet McTeer as Hera Janet McTeer plays Hera, Zeus’s sister and wife, who is the queen of the gods. Her character is described as “complicated” and “hideous” by McTeer, who emphasizes Hera’s love for power and decadence despite her genuine affection for Zeus. Hera’s hidden secrets pose a significant threat to her safety as Zeus’s sanity deteriorates.

Reiki Ayola as Persephone Reiki Ayola portrays Persephone, Hades’ wife and the queen of the Underworld. Ayola’s Persephone challenges the mythological narrative of being forcibly wed and instead depicts a woman who is intelligent and self-empowered, though she finds Hades’ family somewhat insufferable. Ayola describes the couple as “the only happy pair in the series.”

Cliff Curtis as Poseidon Cliff Curtis appears as Poseidon, Zeus’s younger brother and the god of the sea. Poseidon is a laid-back figure who enjoys a leisurely lifestyle on a yacht near Crete, but Zeus’s growing paranoia jeopardizes his peace and puts his loved ones at risk.

Stephen Dillane as Prometheus Stephen Dillane plays Prometheus, Zeus’s oldest adversary. Bound to a cliff and punished eternally for giving fire to humanity, Prometheus symbolizes the struggle between divine authority and individual will. Despite his constraints, he is crucial to a broader scheme aimed at overthrowing Zeus.

Aurora Perrineau as Riddy Aurora Perrineau stars as Riddy, a character with a seemingly glamorous life as the wife of famed musician Orpheus. Riddy’s dissatisfaction with her existence drives her to seek change, setting her on a path that connects with ancient myths. Her role reimagines Eurydice as a more proactive figure.

Additional Cast: The series also features Killian Scott as Orpheus, Nabhaan Rizwa as Dionysus, Misia Butler as Caeneus, Stanley Townsend as Minos, Leila Farzad as Ari, Billie Piper as Cassandra, Debi Mazar as Medusa, and Suzy and Eddie Izzard as Lachesis, among others.

With its blend of mythology, modernity, and a touch of dark humor, Kaos is set to be a standout addition to Netflix’s lineup. The series offers a fresh perspective on classical tales, showcasing a talented cast that brings both gravitas and wit to their roles.
