Katy Perry’s music video for her latest single “Lifetimes” is under scrutiny following revelations that it was filmed without the necessary permits. The 39-year-old pop star shot the video on location in Ibiza and Formentera, showcasing vibrant nightlife scenes and house beats. However, a portion of the video was filmed on the protected dunes of S’Espalmador, an area where access is restricted.
Shortly after the video’s release on August 8, the Environment Department of the Balearic Islands issued a statement indicating that while the incident did not amount to an environmental crime, it was still a breach of regulations due to the lack of proper authorization. According to the department, the situation could have been avoided if the correct permits had been obtained.
“Lifetimes,” a track from Perry’s forthcoming album 143, has already amassed over two million views. The song’s lyrics celebrate enduring love: “Can you believe it? I’m gonna love you ’til the end and then repeat it. I know you feel it. Can you believe it? I’m gonna love you ’til the end and then repeat it.”
The release of “Lifetimes” comes on the heels of controversy surrounding Perry’s collaboration with producer Dr. Luke, who co-directed the video. Dr. Luke’s involvement in the project has been a point of contention due to his legal disputes with singer Kesha, who accused him of sexual assault and other abuses. The recent “Woman’s World” video, which also features Dr. Luke’s involvement, has sparked debate over its representation and production credits. Critics have pointed out that the video, co-written and produced by multiple men, includes a narrative that some feel is at odds with the broader discourse on gender representation.
Despite the backlash over her collaborations, Perry’s dedicated fan base, known as “Katy Cats,” has shown robust support for “Lifetimes.” Many fans have voiced their preference for this new release over “Woman’s World,” highlighting their enthusiasm for Perry’s latest work despite the controversies.
As the discussions continue, Katy Perry remains a focal point in both the music and social spheres, navigating the complexities of her public image and artistic expression.
