Disney has unveiled a new trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King at D23, providing an extended preview of the upcoming film. The trailer reveals the evolving relationship between young Mufasa and his brother Scar, showcasing their transformation from close siblings to fierce rivals.
Director Barry Jenkins, who expressed his deep connection to The Lion King franchise, introduced the footage. Jenkins shared, “Like all of you, ‘The Lion King’ made an indelible mark on me. Hearing the music and feeling every emotion as the story unfolded, a father bestowing a legacy upon his son, a pride being built anew, and a young lion rising to his destiny. Telling his story is an absolute honor.”
Lin-Manuel Miranda will compose the film’s original songs, with a sneak peek of the song “I Always Wanted a Brother” presented at the event. Miranda received a standing ovation alongside Jenkins.
Mufasa: The Lion King serves as a prequel to the 2019 live-action adaptation and delves into the early years of Mufasa and his scheming brother Scar. Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. voice the younger Mufasa and Scar, respectively. The cast also includes Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, with her daughter Blue Ivy Carter voicing Kiara.
New cast members include Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki, and Preston Nyman as Zazu. Mads Mikkelsen voices Kiros, a lion with ambitious plans, while Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James, Anika Noni Rose, and Keith David round out the cast in key roles.
Jenkins reunites with his trusted collaborators—composer Nicholas Britell, editor Joi McMillon, and cinematographer James Laxton—for this project. The 2019 The Lion King remake, directed by Jon Favreau, earned $1.66 billion worldwide, highlighting the franchise’s enduring appeal.
Mufasa: The Lion King is set to roar into theaters on December 20.
