BTS rapper Suga is currently under scrutiny following a DUI scandal that has ignited controversy in South Korea. As the brand ambassador for Samsung, Suga’s involvement with the tech giant is now facing potential jeopardy due to the incident, which occurred on August 6th. The rapper, whose real name is Min Yoongi, has been a prominent figure in Samsung’s global marketing campaigns, contributing to the brand’s strong presence in the tech market.
According to a report by the Korea Herald on August 28, 2024, an unnamed Samsung insider revealed that the company is reconsidering its endorsement deal with Suga. The source indicated that the DUI scandal presents a significant risk for Samsung’s brand image, regardless of Suga’s substantial fan following. “There is a risk in promoting someone as a brand ambassador who has caused a social controversy,” the insider noted. The company is reportedly weighing its options, though no official statement has been issued as of yet.
Despite the growing speculation, Samsung is unlikely to take immediate action against Suga. The insider emphasized that Samsung’s contract is with BTS as a group, not with individual members. Therefore, removing Suga from promotional activities would be complex and not feasible unless he were to leave the group—a scenario that BigHit Entertainment has dismissed as unlikely.
In a related move, Samsung Germany recently deleted photos featuring Suga from their social media accounts, further fueling speculation about his future with the brand. The posts, which were removed on August 17, had previously been shared on August 15 and 16. Fans have speculated that this removal might be a temporary measure in response to the DUI scandal, with the possibility of the content being reinstated once the situation is resolved.
As Samsung deliberates over its next steps, the outcome of the investigation into Suga’s DUI charges will likely play a crucial role in determining his future as the company’s brand ambassador. For now, BTS remains a key figure in Samsung’s marketing strategy, and any decision regarding Suga will need to be carefully considered in the context of the group’s overall endorsement contract.
