Jeremy Renner, known for his role as Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), expressed his surprise and frustration over Robert Downey Jr.’s recent revelation. Downey Jr. shocked fans and former Avengers co-stars by announcing his return to the MCU, not as Iron Man, but as the antagonist Dr. Doom in upcoming Avengers films.
In a recent interview with US Weekly, Renner disclosed his reaction upon learning about Downey Jr.’s new role. He admitted to “blowing up” the Avengers WhatsApp group chat with questions like “What’s going on?” and “Are you hiding this from us?” Renner’s messages were directed at his Avengers teammates, including Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, and Mark Ruffalo.
Renner was clearly taken aback by the news, revealing that he had no prior knowledge of Downey Jr.’s casting. Despite his initial frustration, he expressed excitement about Downey Jr.’s new role and playfully called him a “son of a b*tch” for keeping it a secret.
As for his own future in the MCU, Renner is optimistic. He mentioned the challenges of coordinating schedules among the Avengers cast but is hopeful that the team will reunite. Renner last portrayed Hawkeye in the 2021 Disney+ series, where he passed the mantle to Hailee Steinfeld’s character, Kate Bishop.
The next Avengers films, “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” are set for release on May 1, 2026, and May 7, 2027, respectively. Both movies will be directed by the Russo Brothers, known for their previous work on “Infinity War” and “Endgame.”
