Huw Edwards, the former BBC News presenter known for anchoring the “News at Ten,” has been charged with three counts of making indecent images of children, according to a statement from London’s Metropolitan Police.
The charges stem from images allegedly shared via WhatsApp, a police spokesperson confirmed. Edwards, who was arrested on November 8, 2023, is accused of having in his possession six category A images (the most severe classification in English law), 12 category B images, and 19 category C images. If convicted, Edwards faces a maximum prison sentence of up to 10 years.
The alleged offenses occurred between December 2020 and April 2022. Edwards was officially charged on June 26, 2024, following authorization from the Crown Prosecution Service.
Edwards is scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on Wednesday. Authorities have cautioned against publishing any information that might affect the integrity of upcoming court proceedings.
After a distinguished 40-year career, Edwards resigned from his role at the BBC in late April 2024. During the 2023-2024 fiscal year, he was one of the BBC’s highest-paid employees, earning between £475,000 and £479,999 ($610,000 to $616,000), according to the BBC’s latest annual report.
