In a recent update on Imax’s financial performance, CEO Richard Gelfond expressed strong optimism about the company’s future, asserting that the impact of last year’s Hollywood strikes and the lingering effects of the pandemic are now “firmly behind us.” Speaking to analysts during a conference call following Imax’s second-quarter earnings report, Gelfond highlighted the rebounding box office and an increase in theater installations as key indicators of a promising recovery.
Despite a dip in revenue, with Q2 earnings falling 9 percent to $89 million from $98 million a year earlier, and a 57 percent drop in profits to $3.4 million, Gelfond maintained a positive outlook. The second quarter saw significant success with high-grossing films such as Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2, which became the highest-grossing animated film of all time. Other notable performances included Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Furiosa, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which collectively contributed to a global box office total of $196.4 million for Imax.
Gelfond noted that the resilience of the Hollywood box office and the strong demand for the Imax cinematic experience among filmmakers, studios, and audiences worldwide signify a pivotal moment for the company. “We believe we have reached a pivot point in the post-strike rebound,” Gelfond said, projecting a more positive outlook for 2025. He emphasized that the end of the pandemic and the resolution of industry strikes have positioned Imax to benefit significantly from its “strong, asset-lite business model.”
In terms of growth, Imax installed 24 new theater systems in the second quarter, up from 20 in the same period last year. The company has raised its forecast for new or upgraded theater installations in 2024 to 130, an increase from the previous estimate of 120. This optimistic outlook is bolstered by a significant deal with Wanda Film, Imax’s largest exhibition partner, which will see the upgrade of 61 theaters across China. Imax’s global theater locations have now reached 1,705, marking a 4 percent increase year-over-year, with a backlog of 504 systems awaiting installation.
Looking ahead, Imax remains bullish about the Chinese market, despite some uncertainties regarding the approval and release of Hollywood films by local authorities. Gelfond expressed confidence in the rebound of the market and highlighted the upcoming content slate as a key factor in this optimism.
In addition to its core business, Imax has ventured into alternative content, partnering with NBCUniversal to bring live coverage of the Olympic Games opening ceremony to over 150 U.S. theaters. This initiative, featuring performances by superstars like Celine Dion and Lady Gaga, represents a strategic move to diversify Imax’s offerings and engage audiences with unique, large-screen experiences.
Overall, Gelfond’s statements reflect a broader sense of recovery and growth for Imax, with a focus on leveraging its theater network and adapting to the evolving demands of the film industry.
