Washington DC: Boeing’s CEO, Dave Calhoun, endured a tense hearing before US senators as he apologized to families of plane crash victims, who passionately confronted him throughout the session.
Mr. Calhoun appeared before Congress on Tuesday, acknowledging Boeing’s past errors and emphasizing lessons learned. However, he faced accusations from lawmakers of insufficient action to address a purported culture of retaliation within the company.
The spotlight on Boeing intensified following a recent incident where a door panel detached from a 737 Max aircraft during an Alaska Airlines flight in January, highlighting ongoing safety concerns.
During the hearing, whistleblowers alleged serious production issues with Boeing’s 737 Max, 787 Dreamliner, and 777 models, adding to the company’s challenges.
Mr. Calhoun, CEO since 2020 and set to depart later this year, attributed some of Boeing’s problems to workforce issues exacerbated by Covid-related layoffs and turnover, stating, “So much of this is related to an untrained workforce.”
The most poignant moments of the hearing came as family members of crash victims, holding photos of their loved ones, confronted Mr. Calhoun directly. Zipporah Kuria, who lost her father in a 2019 crash, expressed her determination for justice, urging the US government to hold Boeing accountable.
Another grieving parent, Clariss Moore, directly questioned Mr. Calhoun about her daughter’s final moments on the doomed flight, demanding answers that highlighted the personal toll of Boeing’s safety failures.
Committee chairman Richard Blumenthal opened the hearing by commending the families for their courage and pressing Mr. Calhoun on Boeing’s efforts to reform its safety culture. Unsatisfied with the CEO’s responses, Senator Blumenthal vowed to continue the investigation into Boeing’s practices.
In a symbolic gesture, Mr. Calhoun turned to the families and apologized for the tragedies caused by Boeing’s lapses, acknowledging the immense grief.
The emotional intensity underscored the ongoing scrutiny facing Boeing, with the US Justice Department recently launching a criminal investigation into the company’s conduct.
