The Iowa Speedway’s inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race on Father’s Day was a resounding success, drawing a sold-out crowd to Newton. Fans from across Iowa and beyond gathered to witness the historic event, making it a memorable day for families and racing enthusiasts.
For many attendees, the race was a perfect way to celebrate Father’s Day. Daryl Surface’s family exemplified this sentiment, traveling from Colorado to enjoy the event with four generations present. Surface, who resides in Mitchellville, expressed his hope that the race becomes an annual tradition.
“We really hope it comes back every year because we’ll certainly be here and support the track and support the drivers,” Surface said.
Ted Stroope, a Des Moines police officer, also enjoyed the convenience of the nearby venue. He attended the race with his daughter Charlotte, marking their first-ever NASCAR experience. Stroope appreciated the short drive and the opportunity to spend quality time with his daughter.
“Half an hour drive and you’re here,” Stroope said. “It’s a huge deal. We’ve never been to a NASCAR race at all.”
Stroope had the honor of serving in the honor guard before joining his daughter to watch the race, adding a special touch to their Father’s Day celebration.
Brynlee Kowalski and her sister traveled from La Crosse, Wisconsin, to spend the day with their father at the speedway. Kowalski expressed her excitement about combining her love for racing with her appreciation for her dad.
“I love my dad and I love racing so it’s cool to have both of them on the same day,” Kowalski said.
The event not only provided thrilling racing action but also highlighted the sense of community and family that NASCAR events often foster. Fans were treated to a competitive race, with Ryan Blaney ultimately taking the victory, adding to the day’s excitement and making it a memorable Father’s Day for all in attendance.
