TV Producer Hits Back at Allegations

Nigel Lythgoe, the famed producer behind shows like American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance, has vehemently denied sexual assault allegations made by Paula Abdul. In a legal response filed on October 15, he described her claims as “appalling lies.”

The Allegations Explained

Paula Abdul, known for her role as a judge on American Idol, recently amended her lawsuit against Lythgoe. She now alleges that he assaulted both her and her assistant in 2015. Initially, Abdul only claimed her assistant was assaulted during an incident, but her new complaint also accuses Lythgoe of assaulting her during the same event.

The updated allegations also include claims of incidents dating back to the early 2000s, coinciding with their time on American Idol and during Abdul’s work on So You Think You Can Dance.

Lythgoe’s Response

In his legal documents, Lythgoe characterized Abdul as a “pathological liar” and suggested that her detailed recollections seemed fabricated. He expressed skepticism about her sudden memory of being assaulted, saying it was hard to believe she would suddenly “remember” such an event after initially leaving it out.

Lythgoe also presented evidence, including emails and texts from Abdul that seemed to show a friendly relationship between them. For instance, in one email from 2014, Abdul thanked Lythgoe for flowers and expressed excitement about their projects together. He argued that if her allegations were true, it was “unthinkable” that she would maintain such a cordial relationship.

Accusations of a Tactical Campaign

Lythgoe claimed Abdul’s actions were part of a deliberate attempt to harm his reputation. He accused her of exploiting the current social climate to gain attention and undermine him. In his response, he described Abdul’s claims as “false, despicable, intolerable, and life-changing,” arguing that she was using the legal system for personal gain.

Following Lythgoe’s denial, Abdul’s lawyer, Melissa Eubanks, accused him of victim-shaming, pointing out that he held significant power as a producer while Abdul was a talent on his shows.

As the legal battle unfolds, both sides are making strong claims that highlight the complexities and sensitivities surrounding such serious allegations.
