Connie Chiume, a distinguished South African actress known for her roles in Black Panther and The Lion King, has passed away at the age of 72. The news was confirmed by her family in a brief statement, revealing that Chiume died at a Johannesburg hospital following a “medical procedure.”

Chiume, a celebrated figure in South African television, first gained prominence with her role in the 1989 series Inkom’ Edla Yodwa. Over the decades, she became a household name through her performances in popular TV shows such as Rhythm City, Zone 14, and Gomora. Her work on television earned her numerous accolades, including an NTVA Avanti Award in 2000 and a South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) in 2009.

Her international fame soared with her roles in Marvel’s Black Panther (2018) and its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), where she played Zawavari and later became Wakanda’s Elder Statesman. Chiume also featured in Beyoncé’s The Lion King adaptation as Sarabi, Simba’s mother, showcasing her versatility across various film genres.

Born in Welkom, Free State province, to a Malawian father and a Zulu mother, Chiume initially trained as a nurse before becoming a teacher. Her acting career, however, defined her legacy, with her performances leaving a lasting impact on both South African and international audiences.

In a 2022 interview on the MacG Podcast, Chiume expressed a desire to be remembered in the way her audiences chose, reflecting her deep connection with her viewers. Tributes have poured in from fans and colleagues, praising her remarkable contributions to the arts.
