Jared Harris, the son of the late Richard Harris—who famously portrayed Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films—has voiced his skepticism about the upcoming television reboot of the beloved series. In a recent interview with The Independent, he expressed his confusion regarding the need to revisit such a successful franchise.
A Legacy Worth Preserving
Richard Harris played Dumbledore from 2001 until his passing in 2002, after which Michael Gambon took over the iconic role. Jared Harris, known for his performances in Mad Men and Chernobyl, was asked if he would consider stepping into the shoes of his father. His response was clear: “No, thank you.” He added, “Also, I mean, why do it? I don’t understand. The films were fantastic—leave them alone.”
The Upcoming Series: What to Expect
Despite his reservations, Harris acknowledged that the new series, set to debut in 2026, could provide a rich narrative experience. “It will likely contain a lot of storytelling,” he noted, referencing how television allows for more extensive character development and plot exploration.
The creative team behind the reboot includes Francesca Gardiner from Succession as the writer and showrunner, with Mark Mylod directing. A casting call has already gone out for young actors to portray the iconic trio of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, seeking talent between the ages of 9 and 11.
Mixed Reactions from the Wizarding World
While Harris remains skeptical, other actors from the franchise have shown more enthusiasm about returning to the Wizarding World. Gary Oldman, who played Sirius Black, recently stated he would be open to revisiting the franchise, even suggesting he might consider a role as Dumbledore in the future.
The Enduring Appeal of Harry Potter
The original Harry Potter film series, based on the novels by J.K. Rowling, consists of eight films, starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 2001 and concluding with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in 2011. The films starred Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson as the central trio, captivating audiences worldwide.
In addition to the main series, the Fantastic Beasts spin-off franchise began with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in 2016, further expanding the Wizarding World.
As the reboot approaches, fans and former cast members alike are left wondering: Is revisiting the beloved story necessary, or should the original films be left as they are?
