Meta Platforms has decided not to join the European Union’s AI Pact immediately, a spokesperson announced on Tuesday. The pact serves as a temporary measure until the EU’s groundbreaking AI Act is fully implemented.
In May, EU lawmakers agreed on the AI Act, establishing the first comprehensive regulations for the development and deployment of artificial intelligence. This legislation mandates that companies provide detailed summaries of the data used to train their AI models.
The European Commission has indicated that most provisions of the AI Act will come into effect on August 2, 2026. In the meantime, companies are encouraged to voluntarily join the AI Pact to begin adhering to key obligations outlined in the forthcoming rules.
A Meta spokesperson expressed support for the EU’s harmonized regulations, stating that the company is currently focusing on compliance efforts related to the AI Act. They noted that Meta may consider joining the AI Pact at a later date.
The AI Act represents the fifth pillar of EU legislation, working alongside the Digital Markets Act, Digital Services Act, Data Governance Act, and Data Act.
