A groundbreaking discovery in Kyrgyzstan has unveiled a new dinosaur species, shedding light on a previously unknown chapter of prehistoric life. Named Alpkarakush kyrgyzicus, this theropod dinosaur roamed the region about 165 million years ago. This finding marks the first theropod species identified in Central Asia and adds a significant piece to the puzzle of dinosaur evolution in this part of the world.

Discovery Background
The fossil of Alpkarakush kyrgyzicus was first unearthed by Kyrgyz palaeontologist Aizek Bakirov in 2006, near Tashkumyr in the Balabansai Formation. Excavations between 2006 and 2023 revealed various body parts, including skull bones, vertebrae, and limbs. Notably, scientists uncovered a nearly complete pelvic girdle and hind limbs of a dinosaur measuring 8-9 meters long, alongside remains of smaller individuals.

Unique Features
One of the most striking aspects of Alpkarakush kyrgyzicus is its unusual “eyebrow” bone, which likely supported a horn. This distinctive feature, along with other skeletal elements, provides insight into the appearance and behavior of this ancient predator. The dinosaur belongs to the metriacanthosaurids group and shares links with predatory dinosaurs of East Asia.
