Dubai, December 22, 2023 — The United Arab Emirates’ airports witnessed a remarkable 15% increase in air traffic during the 28th Conference of the Parties, known as COP28, held at Expo City Dubai from November 30 to December 12. This surge was particularly notable at Al Maktoum International Airport, which recorded the highest number of scheduled and unscheduled flights, including private and business jets.

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, the Director-General of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), provided insights into the unprecedented air traffic on the first day of the conference. November 30 marked a historic milestone for civil aviation in the UAE, with an extraordinary 2,848 flights—a testament to the country’s capabilities in managing such high volumes of air traffic.

In a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Al Suwaidi highlighted the meticulous preparation undertaken by the GCAA in collaboration with strategic partners to host this significant international event. Meetings, daily communication sessions, and the enhancement of air navigation management systems were integral components of their strategy. Additionally, simulation exercises were conducted to ensure a seamless response to the anticipated surge in air traffic.

The significance of these preparations was underscored by the fact that COP28 coincided with the peak tourism season in the UAE. Al Suwaidi emphasized that the committees responsible for aviation and airports worked diligently to develop contingency plans, recognizing the unique challenges posed by the convergence of a major international conference and heightened tourist activity.

To efficiently manage the surge in air traffic, the GCAA introduced a dedicated electronic platform designed to control and monitor air traffic. Continuous coordination with air traffic administrations in neighboring countries was maintained to ensure a smooth flow of flights into and out of the UAE.

Al Suwaidi expressed gratitude for the collective efforts of all strategic partners, noting that the UAE’s aviation sector successfully facilitated the safe arrival and departure of all conference delegates. The coordinated and proactive approach adopted by the GCAA and its partners not only met the challenges posed by COP28 but also set a benchmark for the efficient management of high-intensity air traffic scenarios.

As the UAE continues to host international events, such as COP28, its aviation infrastructure and preparedness stand as a testament to the country’s commitment to excellence in hosting and managing global gatherings.
