Vice President Kamala Harris is set to announce her running mate for the 2024 US presidential election within the next week, according to Democratic campaign co-chair Gretchen Whitmer. Speaking to CBS, Whitmer confirmed that the decision is imminent and emphasized that preparations for the upcoming convention are well underway.
Harris has reportedly narrowed her choices to three prominent white men from key states: Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. The decision comes as Harris prepares to face former President Donald Trump and JD Vance in the highly anticipated election.
Top Contenders
Recent polling data highlights the candidates’ varying levels of public favorability. Senator Mark Kelly, who has garnered significant support, leads with a net favorability rating of +10, according to an ABC/Ipsos poll. In contrast, Governor Tim Walz has a net favorability rating of -1, and Governor Josh Shapiro holds a rating of +4.
Kelly’s favorable ratings stand out notably against JD Vance’s -15, a score impacted by controversies and past remarks about Trump. Despite Kelly’s higher favorability, he remains less known to the general public compared to other prominent figures like Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and California Governor Gavin Newsom, who have favorability ratings of +4 and -12, respectively.
Public Reaction and Controversy
Harris’s shortlist has sparked controversy online, particularly with criticisms about the selection of white male candidates. The hashtag #WhiteDudesForKamala has gained traction on X (formerly Twitter), with users expressing frustration and accusing Harris of not aligning with her own advocacy for diversity and inclusion. Some comments on social media reflect dissatisfaction with the perceived lack of diversity among the top picks.
Campaign Strategy and Focus
Harris’s campaign is reportedly focused on choosing a running mate who can effectively challenge JD Vance and contribute to a strong electoral strategy. With a favorability rating of 43%, Harris is seeking a candidate who can bolster her ticket and address key issues such as immigration, which is central to Kelly’s platform, and electoral significance in swing states like Pennsylvania and Minnesota.
Gretchen Whitmer anticipates a “convention of happy warriors” and highlights the importance of selecting a vice-presidential candidate who is “qualified and ready to serve the American people, protect their freedoms, and fight for their future.”
Candidates’ Readiness
All three potential running mates—Kelly, Walz, and Shapiro—have publicly expressed their readiness to serve if chosen. Kelly, emphasizing the collective nature of the campaign, stated, “This is not about me,” while Walz and Shapiro have expressed confidence in Harris’s judgment, trusting that she will make the best decision for the country’s interests.
As the announcement approaches, the focus remains on Harris’s ability to select a running mate who not only complements her candidacy but also strengthens her campaign against formidable opponents.
