India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is making significant strides ahead of the Paris Olympics, expanding its footprint in France and Europe. Recently, NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) achieved a milestone by enabling UPI for online ticket booking at the Eiffel Tower, setting the stage for broader acceptance at prominent locations in Paris.
Following this success, UPI is now accepted at Galeries Lafayette’s flagship store in Haussmann, a partnership facilitated by Lyra, a leader in secure e-commerce and proximity payments in France. This strategic move comes just in time for the Paris Olympics, scheduled to commence on July 26, anticipating a substantial influx of Indian visitors. Jawed Ashraf, India’s Ambassador to France and Monaco, highlighted the opportunity this presents for UPI to gain traction in France, marking a pivotal step towards its internationalization as a trusted digital payment method.
Ritesh Shukla, CEO of NPCI International, emphasized the significance of the collaboration with Galeries Lafayette, not only for enabling UPI payments at a prestigious venue but also for advancing its adoption as a secure cross-border payment solution among Indian tourists. This partnership underscores UPI’s potential to enhance convenience and security in international transactions, reinforcing its appeal in the global marketplace.
Christophe Mariette, Chairman of Lyra India, expressed satisfaction in pioneering the in-store acceptance of UPI at Galeries Lafayette Haussmann, marking a first in Europe. This initiative is expected to benefit a significant number of Indian tourists visiting Paris annually, offering them the familiarity and reliability of UPI for their transactions.
NPCI’s vision extends beyond immediate gains, aiming to solidify UPI’s presence across France and Europe, catalyzing further growth and adoption as a preferred payment method. With its robust security features and user-friendly interface, UPI is poised to redefine digital payments not only in India but also on the global stage, exemplifying India’s technological prowess and commitment to innovation.
In conclusion, the integration of UPI at prominent Parisian locations signifies a pivotal moment in its journey towards becoming a universally recognized payment solution. As India prepares to showcase its digital prowess at the Paris Olympics, UPI stands ready to facilitate seamless transactions and enhance the experience of Indian visitors in France, thereby strengthening bilateral ties and setting new benchmarks in international payment systems.
