The case of being spied on by Pegasus spyware is in the news again. This time it is not about India, but about Israel. A media report claimed that Israeli police used to spy on people with Pegasus spyware. Regarding this report, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has said that the allegations against the police are very serious. These will be checked.
Bennett said Pegasus and other tools like it are vital to the fight against terrorism and serious crime, but they cannot be used to spy on Israeli citizens or other important figures. Deputy Attorney General Amit Merari is investigating. The government will soon appoint a new officer in this matter as well.
The Israeli government will set up a commission for the investigation.
Meanwhile, the Israeli government informed about the formation of a commission to investigate the matter. The country’s Minister of Public Security, Omer Bar Lev, said: “This commission will investigate the misuse of NSO’s Pegasus spyware to hack the phones of Israeli government officials, businessmen and aides of ex-prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.”
The
report claimed that those who were spied included Anwar, Netanyahu’s sons, Topaz Luk and Jonathan Urich, media advisors to the former prime minister, Irish Elovic, wife of Shaul Elovic, a former controlling shareholder of Bezek, in addition to finance, Director Generals of the Ministry of Justice and Transportation – Shai Babad, Karen Turner and Amy Palmor.
