DETROIT (AP) — Donald Trump’s rally in Detroit took an unexpected turn on Friday night when a microphone failure left him pacing the stage in silence for nearly 20 minutes.
Just as Trump was about to dive into a passionate discussion on tariffs—teasing the crowd with hints about “the most beautiful word in the dictionary”—the sound cut out. With no way to connect with his audience, Trump wandered around, looking visibly frustrated while the crowd rallied around him with chants of “USA” and “We love Trump.”
While the audience continued to cheer and show their support, Trump often turned his back to them, adding to the awkwardness of the situation. On the big screens, messages flashed: “Technical Difficulties” and “Complicated Business,” but there was little he could do except wait.
This wasn’t the first hiccup for Trump in recent days; just earlier in the week, he had to cut a town hall short when several attendees required medical assistance, opting instead to play music. But in Detroit, he appeared at the mercy of the technical mishap, with aides typically equipped with backup microphones unable to resolve the issue promptly.
Known for being meticulous about his rallies, Trump often comments on the mechanics of his events. Earlier in the day, “Fox & Friends” hosts joked about his penchant for adjusting lighting during interviews.
Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign seized the moment, sharing footage of Trump’s silent pacing on social media, suggesting that at 78, he might not have the energy needed to serve as president again.
As the delay dragged on, the audience’s enthusiasm didn’t wane. They engaged in a wave and continued to chant in support. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, an aide handed Trump a replacement microphone that worked.
Upon resuming his speech, he quipped, “I won’t pay the bill for this stupid company. I won’t pay the bill, and then we’ll have a story that Trump didn’t pay the bill to a contractor.”
Despite the hiccup, Trump’s ability to turn a technical failure into a moment of humor showcased his resilience on the campaign trail.
