In a dramatic reversal, former President Donald Trump has announced he will vote against a Florida ballot measure designed to protect abortion rights, following a significant backlash from conservative supporters. The decision comes one day after Trump appeared to endorse the measure in an NBC News interview, sparking criticism from anti-abortion activists.

Trump’s latest declaration, made on Friday during an interview with Fox News, marks a shift from his previous comments in which he expressed support for extending the time frame for abortions beyond the state’s current six-week limit. The former president reiterated his belief that the six-week ban is too restrictive, but he maintained his position against the proposed constitutional amendment that seeks to safeguard abortion rights in Florida.

“You need more time than six weeks,” Trump stated. “I’ve disagreed with that right from the early primaries when I heard about it.” He further criticized the measure by alleging, without evidence, that Democrats support allowing abortions at any stage of pregnancy. This claim has been widely disputed, as most states, including Florida, have restrictions that make late-term abortions rare and typically only permitted in cases of severe health risks or foetal abnormalities.

Trump’s comments came in response to questions following his initial, seemingly supportive remarks during an NBC News interview. On Thursday, Trump had suggested that a six-week limit was insufficient and that he would advocate for a longer period. However, his subsequent decision to vote against the measure has underscored the complex dynamics of his stance on abortion and the influence of conservative pressure on his campaign.

The former president’s reversal has drawn sharp reactions from his Democratic opponent, Vice-President Kamala Harris, who criticized Trump’s stance as indicative of his broader anti-abortion agenda. “Donald Trump just made his position on abortion very clear: He will vote to uphold an abortion ban so extreme it applies before many women even know they are pregnant,” Harris stated.

The backlash from the anti-abortion community has been swift and severe. Prominent conservative figures, including pundit Erick Erickson and Albert Mohler Jr., president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, condemned Trump’s remarks. Erickson described the situation as a potential turning point for Trump, while Mohler warned that Trump’s comments could alienate pro-life voters.

The Trump campaign, along with running mate JD Vance, has since emphasized that Trump’s final decision on the Florida measure would be based on his own judgment. This announcement follows Trump’s previous criticisms of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s six-week abortion ban, a policy that DeSantis signed into law while challenging Trump in the Republican primary last year.

As the debate over abortion rights continues to polarize American politics, Trump’s evolving position on the Florida ballot measure highlights the intense scrutiny and pressure faced by political figures navigating this contentious issue. The outcome of the ballot measure, along with Trump’s final stance, could have significant implications for both his campaign and the broader national discourse on reproductive rights.
