“City of God: The Fight Rages On” has officially been renewed for a second season at Max, following its debut on HBO Latino and Max on August 25. The first season, consisting of six episodes, continues to release new episodes weekly on Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT, with the second episode set to air on September 1.
The series picks up 20 years after the events of the acclaimed film, revisiting the City of God community through the eyes of Wilson (Rocket). Wilson returns when a young drug dealer’s release from prison reignites conflict in the neighborhood, drawing the residents into a struggle between drug dealers, militias, and government forces. Despite the turmoil, the community’s determination to escape the cycle of violence drives them to unite against their oppressors.
Alexandre Rodrigues reprises his role as Wilson from the original “City of God” film, which was adapted from Paulo Lins’ novel. The cast includes Thiago Martins, Roberta Rodrigues, Sabrina Rosa, Wayne LeGette, Marcos Palmeira, Andréia Horta, and Kiko Marques.
The series is penned by Maíra Oliveira, Patricia Andrade, and Lins, with Andrea Barata Ribeiro and Fernando Meirelles producing for O2 Filmes. Cris Abu and Gustavo Gontijo are co-producers, with Bruno Costa and Thatiane Almeida directing episodes. Executive producers include Mariano Cesar, Anouk Aaron, and Vanessa Miranda for Warner Bros. Discovery, with Aly Muritiba also directing.
