In an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Harris outlined a firm stance on immigration, vowing to implement stricter border controls and enforce existing laws against illegal crossings. “We have laws that have to be followed and enforced,” Harris stated. “There should be consequences for those who cross our border illegally.”

The vice president also reaffirmed her support for Israel, aligning with President Joe Biden’s strong backing of the nation amid the ongoing Gaza conflict. Despite some Democratic voices calling for a reassessment of U.S. military aid to Israel due to the high Palestinian casualties, Harris emphasized her commitment to continuing support. “We must get a ceasefire and a deal done,” she said, rejecting calls to withhold weapons.

Harris also addressed her broader campaign strategy, expressing interest in including a Republican in her cabinet if elected. “It’s important to have people with different views and experiences at the table,” she explained.

Her comments come as she enjoys a boost in the polls and significant campaign contributions. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Thursday, Harris leads former President Donald Trump by 4 percentage points. Critics had questioned her ability to handle unscripted interviews, but Harris appeared confident and informed during the discussion.

On economic issues, Harris defended her and Biden’s record, attributing ongoing inflation to the previous administration’s handling of the pandemic. “Prices are still too high,” she admitted, but highlighted the administration’s efforts to mitigate the economic impact.

Harris has notably shifted her stance on several issues since her 2020 presidential bid, moving towards more centrist positions, including a softened approach on fracking and a stronger emphasis on border security.

In response to Trump’s recent attacks, including claims questioning her identity, Harris dismissed them as “same old tired playbook,” and expressed readiness for a forthcoming debate with Trump.

The interview marks Harris’s first major one-on-one since Biden’s endorsement of her as his successor. Conducted in Savannah, Georgia, the discussion reflects her strategic positioning as the election approaches, aiming to solidify her policy stances and engage with voters on critical issues.
