In a groundbreaking initiative to nurture technological innovation and advance the field of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI), the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) announced the commencement of the second edition of the Emirates Robotics Competition. This prestigious event, organized by Dubai Future Labs in collaboration with Khalifa University (KU) and the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), is set to witness the participation of 61 teams from 14 local and international universities across the United Arab Emirates.
The competition, slated to culminate in February 2024, underscores the commitment of the UAE to position itself as a global hub for robotics and AI technologies. The participating teams, comprising 3-6 individuals each, will be vying for the opportunity to showcase their skills and compete in the final stage of the competition. The spotlight of this year’s edition will be on three themed challenges: sustainability, recycling, and waste collection.
The sustainability challenge will task robots with the intelligent distribution of recyclable waste in designated locations, while the recycling challenge will require them to collect waste from the ground efficiently. The waste collection challenge presents a unique test, as robots must navigate and extract pieces of refuse from water sources. These challenges not only push the boundaries of technological capabilities but also emphasize the vital role of robotics in addressing real-world issues.
Khalifa Al Qama, Director of Dubai Future Labs, expressed the competition’s broader vision, stating, “The Emirates Robotics Competition aims to prepare a new generation of robotic developers in the UAE, providing an opportunity to showcase their skills and contribute to current and future challenges in key sectors.” Al Qama highlighted the alignment of the competition with the goals set by the Dubai Robotics and Automation Program, a visionary initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, Executive Vice-President of Khalifa University, emphasized the collaboration’s significance, stating, “This competition aims to inspire young individuals, both in the country and globally, to explore developments in the field of science and innovation.” Aligning with the directives of the UAE leadership, the competition serves as a platform for the growth of the robotics sector, a cornerstone of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Dr. Yousef Al Assaf, President of RIT Dubai, echoed the sentiment of collaboration, noting, “Our partnership with Khalifa University and Dubai Future Foundation is an example of how collaboration enriches the experiences of students, faculty, and communities.” RIT Dubai’s commitment to fostering critical thinking and practical knowledge is evident in their ongoing involvement in the Emirates Robotics Competition.
The inaugural edition of the competition, held previously, saw the participation of 52 teams representing 17 local and international universities. The organizers shortlisted 21 teams from 12 universities, focusing on challenges related to navigation and manipulation. The Middlesex University Dubai team emerged victorious in the transportation challenge, while the Manipal University Dubai team secured the top spot in the maneuvering challenge.
As the Emirates Robotics Competition 2024 unfolds, it promises to be a testament to the creativity, innovation, and problem-solving capabilities of young talents, paving the way for a future where robotics and AI play integral roles in addressing global challenges. The collaboration between academia, industry, and government entities exemplifies the UAE’s commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and technological advancement.
