Director James Gunn is making waves with the first look at Krypto the Superdog, who will make his live-action debut in the highly anticipated Superman movie, set for release on July 11, 2025. Inspired by Gunn’s own rescue dog, Ozu, Krypto’s inclusion in the film adds a touching personal element to the story.
In an emotional social media post, Gunn shared how adopting Ozu—a pup who came from a challenging background of hoarding—shaped the character of Krypto. He described Ozu’s initial antics, including destroying furniture and even chewing up his laptop, and reflected on how he wondered, “How difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?” This thought led him to weave Krypto into the script, fundamentally altering the narrative as Ozu transformed Gunn’s life.
“What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month,” Gunn wrote. He also reassured fans that Ozu has come a long way, stating, “By the way, Ozu today is, fairly often, a very good boy.”
The teaser image shows David Corenswet’s Superman perched on the moon, gazing down at Earth alongside Krypto, setting the stage for their heroic bond. Krypto, who first appeared in DC Comics in 1955, has been featured in numerous animated series but has never been brought to life in a live-action film until now.
In the original comics, Krypto was Superman’s pet on Krypton, sent to Earth just before the planet’s destruction. The animated series “Krypto the Superdog” debuted in 2005, showcasing the canine hero’s adventures as he fought evil while disguised as an ordinary dog.
Gunn’s upcoming Superman film explores the superhero’s struggle to balance his Kryptonian legacy with his human upbringing, embodying truth, justice, and kindness in a world that often overlooks these values.
The star-studded cast also includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, among others.
