One of the biggest stories of the 2024 WNBA All-Star rosters is the pairing of Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, two talented rookies who will play as teammates for the first time. Team WNBA and Team USA will square off in this eagerly awaited matchup on July 20 in Phoenix.
During her storied career at Iowa, Caitlin Clark became the Division I all-time leading scorer. She has carried over her offensive skills and impressive shooting range to the WNBA with ease. With 700,735 votes, the Indiana Fever player became the clear winner among fans. Teammate Aliyah Boston, who received 618,680 votes and won Rookie of the Year the previous year, is not far behind her.
In her rookie season, Angel Reese, who received 381,518 votes and finished in the top five, has also left a lasting impression. The Chicago Sky player, who led the league in rebounds per game while at LSU, is well-known for her outstanding rebounding abilities. Reese is presently enjoying an 11-game WNBA record double-double streak, demonstrating her unwavering dominance on the court.
When Kim Mulkey’s Tigers won LSU’s first-ever national basketball championship in 2023, the rivalry between Clark and Reese began. They have since played each other three times in the WNBA, with the Fever leading the series 2-1. In their most recent meeting on June 23, Reese’s outstanding performance of 25 points and 16 rebounds helped the Sky win by a slim margin of 88-87.
Clark praised Reese’s season approximately a week prior to the official announcement of the All-Star rosters, stating that it would be “a lot of fun” to play with her for the first time.
In contrast, Reese reacted angrily to the All-Star selection at the press conference held after the Sky’s 85-77 victory over the Atlanta Dream. “I am just incredibly joyful. “I am aware of my efforts,” Reese remarked. “A lot of people did not believe that I could play in the league and that I would not be the same player that I was in college when I first entered the league. I am so grateful to my coaches and teammates for their unwavering faith and belief in me.”
A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces and Breanna Stewart of the New York Liberty completed the top five fan vote rankings, joining Clark and Reese. Wilson and Stewart, however, will not be joining Team WNBA because this is an Olympic year. Rather, they will be a member of the Team USA roster that will participate in the All-Star weekend matchup against Team WNBA.
The WNBA All-Star Game, which will be played at Phoenix’s Footprint Center and feature some of the league’s best players, is expected to be an exciting occasion.
