When the United States unexpectedly advanced into the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup, Saurabh Netravalkar informed his manager at software major Oracle that he wouldn’t be returning to work for another week. This decision came as no surprise to those who know him both as a skilled programmer and a standout cricketer representing Team USA.
Hailing from Mumbai, Netravalkar, a left-arm seamer, has been instrumental in Team USA’s remarkable journey in the tournament, notably securing crucial victories against Pakistan and giving heavyweights like India a tough challenge. His pivotal role in the Super Over against Pakistan and dismissing Indian cricket icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has not only elevated his profile in the cricketing world but also earned him admiration back home in India and in the US.
Netravalkar’s dual life as a cricketer and a technology expert at Oracle, where he has developed innovative search technologies and holds patents, showcases his exceptional ability to balance two demanding careers. “Every project has a deadline so there is pressure… There have been instances when I have worked at night,” Netravalkar shared, reflecting on his commitment to both cricket and his professional responsibilities.
Having initially pursued cricket passionately in India, including representing the country in the Under-19 World Cup, Netravalkar’s journey took a turn when he pursued higher studies in the US, eventually settling into a career in technology. However, his love for cricket never waned, leading him to excel in both realms.
Netravalkar’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed at Oracle, where colleagues have rallied behind him during his cricketing exploits, demonstrating unwavering support as he balances his responsibilities. “My whole office is watching the game, they all have been very supportive,” he mentioned, reflecting on the camaraderie and encouragement he receives from his workplace.
As Team USA continues to surprise and delight cricket enthusiasts around the world, Saurabh Netravalkar remains a symbol of determination and versatility, showing that with dedication and focus, one can excel in multiple fields simultaneously.
His story serves as an inspiration to many aspiring professionals who dream of balancing their passions with their careers, proving that with the right mindset and support, anything is possible.
