The Los Angeles Dodgers will be without star Mookie Betts for an extended period after the outfielder-turned-shortstop suffered a fractured left hand during Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Royals.

Betts, facing right-hander Dan Altavilla in the seventh inning, took a 97.9 mph fastball to his hand, immediately collapsing in pain on the field. The incident marked a sobering moment for both teams, with Altavilla expressing deep regret over the unintentional pitch.

“I was trying to go inside on a 1-2 count and it slipped armside out of my hand. Absolutely no intent,” Altavilla clarified post-game.

Manager Dave Roberts confirmed that Betts will not require surgery, but the timetable for his return remains uncertain as the injury heals naturally.

“It’s just going to be rest and let the bones heal,” Roberts explained, indicating that Betts will consult with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Steven Shin to evaluate treatment options.

This setback comes as a blow to the Dodgers, as Betts has been a key offensive force with a .304 batting average and .893 OPS this season, contributing 10 home runs. Known for his defensive prowess, Betts transitioned to shortstop this year and has excelled in the role, demonstrating versatility alongside his renowned skills in right field.

With Betts out, the Dodgers face significant challenges, compounded by existing injuries to third baseman Max Muncy and pitchers Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Michael Grove.

“We’ve got to move forward,” Roberts emphasized. “Guys are going to get opportunities and need to step up.”

In Betts’ absence, Miguel Rojas will assume primary shortstop duties, supported by Kiké Hernández, while Miguel Vargas is slated for a call-up from Triple-A to bolster the roster.

Despite the setback, the Dodgers remain determined to maintain their competitive edge in the National League, with players like Shohei Ohtani poised to step into leadership roles.

“We understand Mookie’s a big part of our ballclub,” Ohtani remarked through his interpreter. “It’s up to us to step up and keep pushing forward.”

Betts, known for his resilience in past injuries, remains optimistic about his recovery and vows to support his teammates from the sidelines.

“As tough as it is, I’ll be cheering them on,” Betts affirmed, his hand wrapped post-game. “It’s about resting up and being ready to go when I’m healed.”

The Dodgers, currently leading their division, face upcoming challenges as they navigate Betts’ absence and aim to maintain their position in the competitive NL West.
