As the countdown to the 2023 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar reaches its final hours, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has announced that almost one million tickets have already been sold for the highly anticipated football tournament. Set to kick off on January 12, the event promises to be a monumental occasion, showcasing the best teams from across Asia in a month-long football extravaganza.

Hassan Al Kuwari, the marketing and communications executive director of the organizing committee, expressed the nation’s enthusiasm, stating, “Qatar is ready to welcome the best teams from Asia to what we hope will be the best-ever edition of the AFC Asian Cup. Our stadiums and sporting infrastructure are set to deliver a memorable tournament to players and fans.”

This 18th edition of the AFC Asian Cup holds historical significance as it marks the first time Qatar hosts a major football event since the successful hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Twenty-four teams are set to compete in 51 games across nine stadiums, with the opening match and the final scheduled to take place at the iconic Lusail Stadium.

Having previously hosted the Asian Cup in 1988 and 2011, as well as the 2022 World Cup, Qatar’s Local Organizing Committee is confident and prepared to stage yet another exciting football gala. Al Kuwari emphasized that the tournament builds on the sporting legacy established by the World Cup, reaffirming Qatar’s position as a global sporting hub.

In preparation for the event, the LOC has recruited 6,000 volunteers to support the month-long spectacle. Over 3,000 journalists, photographers, broadcasters, and digital content creators from 55 countries and regions are expected to cover the tournament.

Ticket sales have seen significant interest from fans in Qatar, India, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the Philippines, and Indonesia. The diverse fanbase reflects the widespread appeal of the AFC Asian Cup, bringing together people from different cultures and backgrounds.

Hassan Al Kuwari highlighted that hosting mega sporting events like the Asian Cup goes beyond football, providing fans with the opportunity to learn about new cultures, build lasting friendships, and create meaningful memories. To enhance accessibility, the LOC has also announced a free shuttle service offering wheelchair-accessible travel to passengers with disabilities.

As the tournament approaches, Qatar’s local tourism industry anticipates a boost, with various activities planned to stimulate the market as part of the tournament celebrations. A large-scale fan festival area in Doha will allow fans to gather and enjoy the beautiful game, creating a carnival-like atmosphere across the country.

Omar Abdulrahman Al-Jaber, director of shared services at Qatar Tourism, expressed enthusiasm about partnering with different stakeholders to provide an exceptional experience for fans during the tournament. With the stage set, the 2023 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar promises not only thrilling football matches but also a celebration of cultures and a showcase of Qatar’s commitment to hosting world-class sporting events.
