Shaun White of the United States will finish his final Olympic Games without a medal.
In his fifth Olympic Games, the experienced snowboarder finished fourth in the men’s halfpipe, 2.25 points short of the podium.
White had a score of 85 after the second of three runs and was in the silver medal position, but he fell on his third attempt. Each snowboarder gets three runs down the halfpipe course, with the best score counted toward the overall rankings.
After his final run, White was obviously distraught on the track and earned a standing ovation from the audience, which included his fellow competitors.
Last Friday, White, 35, revealed that the Beijing Olympics will be his last tournament before retiring. In the halfpipe, he has three gold medals and was the reigning champion from 2018 to 2019.
Ayumu Hirano of Japan won the gold medal with a final run score of 96. With a score of 92.5, Scott James of Australia won silver, and Jan Scherrer of Austria won bronze with a score of 87.25.
