Music enthusiasts, get ready for a rare opportunity! The legendary recording console used by the Beatles on their final album, Abbey Road, is hitting the market after a meticulous restoration. Starting October 29, this one-of-a-kind EMI TG1234 console will be available for purchase on Reverb, the online marketplace for music gear.
Originally custom-built for EMI Studios in 1968, this console played a crucial role in crafting the distinctive sound of Abbey Road, the Beatles’ last recorded album before their split in 1969. Dave Harries, who worked on numerous Beatles sessions, remarked, “Abbey Road is one of the best albums ever made, and it sounds incredible because of this recording console.” He emphasized how the unique recording techniques used on the album set a new standard for pop music production.
Beyond its iconic use in Abbey Road, the console was instrumental in the solo projects of each Beatles member. It contributed to John Lennon’s hit “Instant Karma!”, Paul McCartney’s debut album McCartney, George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass, and Ringo Starr’s Sentimental Journey. Notably, Harrison once inquired about purchasing a console for himself but was denied due to concerns about competition.
Producer and engineer Mike Hedges, who worked with renowned artists like The Cure and U2, praised the console’s quality, stating, “It enhances everything that goes through it.” After sitting unused for over five decades, the console underwent a five-year restoration process, reuniting it with 70% of its original parts, thanks to Beatles collaborator and former EMI engineer Brian Gibson.
This unique console is not just a relic; it stands up to modern equipment and is considered by many to be superior due to its exceptional craftsmanship. Harries pointed out, “This particular console is a one-off. You can’t replace it.”
