Hemlock Semiconductor is on the rise, thanks to a significant $325 million federal grant announced on Monday. This funding marks the first major investment in Michigan from the CHIPS and Science Act, which was passed in 2022, and it promises to have a substantial impact on the local economy.
Creating Jobs and Driving Economic Growth
The new project is set to create around 180 high-paying advanced manufacturing jobs and over 1,000 construction jobs. Senator Gary Peters (D-Michigan) emphasized the importance of these jobs, stating that they offer not just employment but also valuable training opportunities for the local workforce. “This is a big deal for Michigan,” he said. “We expect them to hire locally.”
The funding will help Hemlock Semiconductor build a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility to expand production of silicon used in semiconductor chips. This material is crucial for modern manufacturing, especially after the pandemic-induced chip shortages that affected many industries, including automotive.
A Step Toward National Security
Senator Peters highlighted the significance of relocating semiconductor production to the U.S., not only for economic reasons but also for national security. “These chips are essential not just for everyday products like cars and washing machines, but also for advanced military equipment and aviation,” he noted. Bringing manufacturing back to Michigan is a crucial step in securing the supply chain for these essential technologies.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her excitement over Hemlock’s investment, noting that it contributes to a growing trend of job creation in the region. Recent developments, including a billion-dollar expansion by GM in Flint and a new logistics center on the old Buick City site, signal a promising future for Mid-Michigan.
Hemlock’s Role in the Semiconductor Industry
Hemlock Semiconductor is the only U.S.-based manufacturer of hyper-pure semiconductor-grade polysilicon, a vital input for chip production. The company plans to invest over $800 million in this project, creating hundreds of jobs and boosting the local economy. U.S. Representative Dan Kildee (D-Michigan) emphasized that investments like this are key to reviving American manufacturing. “This is a major economic investment that will help secure our supply chains and grow our economy,” he said.
The grant from the CHIPS Act is part of a broader effort by the Biden administration to bring semiconductor production back to the U.S. After decades of manufacturing being concentrated in Asia, more than $36 billion has already been allocated from the CHIPS Act to support this goal.

As Hemlock Semiconductor prepares to move forward, it will undergo due diligence before signing a final term sheet to secure the grant. Portions of the funding will be released based on specific project milestones. The push for a robust domestic semiconductor industry is gaining momentum, and Hemlock’s expansion is a vital piece of that puzzle.
