Meta Platforms’ popular social media giants, Facebook and Instagram, are largely back online after a significant outage affected thousands of users across the U.S. on Monday. According to Downdetector, which tracks service interruptions, the peak of the outage occurred around 1:35 p.m. ET, with over 12,000 users reporting issues with Facebook and more than 5,000 with Instagram.

Fortunately, by 2:09 p.m. ET, the number of reported outages had significantly dropped, with around 659 incidents for Facebook and about 450 for Instagram. It’s worth noting that Downdetector compiles its data from user-submitted reports, so the actual number of affected users may vary.

As of now, Meta has not provided any comments regarding the outage, leaving users to speculate about the cause. Earlier this year, a similar disruption hit Facebook and Instagram, impacting hundreds of thousands globally for more than two hours due to a technical issue, which resulted in over 550,000 reports for Facebook and around 92,000 for Instagram at its peak.

For many, these brief outages can feel frustrating, especially given how integral these platforms have become to daily communication and connection. As users navigate the ups and downs of social media, it’s clear that even the tech giants face their share of challenges.
