OpenAI has identified several attempts to misuse its AI models, particularly in generating fake content designed to influence elections. In a report released on Wednesday, the company revealed that cybercriminals increasingly employ AI tools, including ChatGPT, to create misleading articles and social media posts aimed at swaying public opinion.
So far this year, OpenAI has thwarted over 20 such efforts. Notably, in August, it disabled several ChatGPT accounts that produced articles concerning the U.S. elections. Additionally, the company banned accounts from Rwanda in July that generated comments about the country’s elections for posting on the social media platform X.
Despite these attempts, OpenAI noted that none of the activities led to significant viral engagement or sustainable audiences. As the U.S. prepares for presidential elections, there are growing concerns about the proliferation of fake content generated by AI tools and shared on social media.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has reported an increasing threat from foreign actors, including Russia, Iran, and China, aiming to influence the upcoming elections on November 5 through the dissemination of false or divisive information.
Last week, OpenAI further solidified its status as one of the world’s most valuable private companies following a $6.6 billion funding round.
