“Joker: Folie à Deux” has taken the international box office by storm, debuting with an estimated $81.1 million this weekend. However, the film’s domestic performance tells a different story, as it managed to pull in a disappointing $40 million. With a global total of $121.1 million so far, the sequel to the 2019 phenomenon has a long way to go to justify its hefty $200 million production budget.
In contrast to its predecessor, which boasted a lean budget of $65 million, “Joker: Folie à Deux” faces significant financial hurdles. Critical reviews have been overwhelmingly negative, with audiences echoing that sentiment by awarding the film a lackluster “D” CinemaScore. Much of the financial strain comes from high-profile fees for director Todd Phillips, returning star Joaquin Phoenix, and Lady Gaga, who brings a fresh interpretation to the iconic Harley Quinn.
The film was released across 25,788 screens in 76 international markets, achieving notable grosses including $8 million in the U.K., $6.9 million in Germany, $5.6 million in Italy, $5.5 million in Mexico, and $5 million in France. The anticipation continues as “Joker: Folie à Deux” is set to open in Japan next week, followed by its debut in China on October 16.
While the original “Joker” broke records, earning $335 million domestically and a staggering $743 million internationally, it now faces a more challenging landscape. At one point, it held the title of the highest-grossing R-rated film until it was surpassed by “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which grossed $1.32 billion worldwide.
As critics and audiences remain divided over the sequel, director Todd Phillips has indicated he may be stepping away from the comic book genre altogether. “It was fun to play in this sort of sandbox for two movies,” he remarked, “but I think we’ve said what we wanted to say in this world.” As the film continues its run, the question remains: can “Joker: Folie à Deux” turn its initial struggles into a success story?
